The Algerian cultural scene is in mourning after the passing of Faouzi Saichi, a celebrated actor in cinema and theatre, who died this Monday morning at the age of 74.
The National Office for Broadcasting and Audiovisual (ONDA) confirmed the news, marking a profound loss for Algeria’s artistic landscape.
Born on April 9, 1951, in Aïn Sefra, Naâma, Saichi leaves behind a remarkable career and an enduring legacy. His death has plunged the cultural community into grief, sparking a wave of heartfelt tributes.
In a message of condolence to his family, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune honored his memory: “We offer our condolences to the artist’s family in their immense sorrow. He left behind the imprint of a renowned and distinguished artist through his constructive works.”

Moving to Algiers as a child, Faouzi Saichi began his journey in the dramatic arts. His film career took off in 1977 with Leïla et les autres, directed by Sid Ali Mazif.
His breakthrough came in 1982 with Rabah Laradji’s Un toit, une famille, which earned him the Best Actor Award at the prestigious Carthage Film Days. This recognition cemented his status as one of Algeria’s most talented actors.

Over the decades, Saichi built a rich filmography, appearing in notable productions such as Les Folles Années du Twist (1986), De Hollywood à Tamanrasset (1991), Beur Blanc Rouge (2006), and La Route d’Istanbul (2016) by Rachid Bouchareb.
He also found massive success on television, winning the hearts of Algerians with his role in the popular comedy series Nass Mlah City, where his charisma and humor made him a household name.
