Azouz Nasri Elected President of Algeria's Council of the Nation

Azouz Nasri has officially succeeded Salah Goudjil as President of the Council of the Nation, receiving unanimous support from all parliamentary groups during a plenary session on Monday. This marks a significant turning point for the institution as Algeria strives for institutional stability and democratic strengthening.

Azouz Nasri’s election occurred during a special plenary session dedicated to the installation of new members and the selection of the new President. This marks the partial renewal of the Council's membership, scheduled for 2025. Nasri, representing the parliamentary group of the Presidential Third, secured overwhelming support from all groups within the Council. His election demonstrates a rare political consensus that signals a period of stability for the Council of the Nation.

Nasri's appointment comes at a strategic moment for Algeria’s ongoing efforts to modernize its democratic institutions. His predecessor, Salah Goudjil, did not seek re-election due to constitutional term limits after serving two consecutive terms. Goudjil, who was appointed in 2019, had succeeded Abdelkader Bensalah after Bouteflika’s resignation.

Azouz Nasri’s Background:

A highly respected figure in Algeria’s legal system, Nasri has held key positions, including President of the Supreme Court from 1995 to 2001 and a seat on the Constitutional Council between 1989 and 1995. He was appointed Senator in February 2022 for a six-year term. Nasri is known for his integrity and his firm stance on electoral transparency, particularly during the 2017 local elections.

Nasri’s election as President of the Council of the Nation signals a united political vision for Algeria’s democratic future. His vast legal and political experience positions him as a key figure in steering the Council during this crucial phase.
