Tebboune Orders Postponement of Constitutional Technical Revision

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered the postponement of the technical revision of Algeria’s Constitution during a Council of Ministers meeting held on Sunday, December 28, while approving a new draft law governing political parties.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune chaired the Council of Ministers meeting on Sunday, December 28, during which several key political reforms were discussed, according to Algerian state television.

During the session, the Council approved the draft law on political parties. President Tebboune welcomed the move, congratulating the political class and describing the law as a “new achievement” for Algeria’s democratic process.

However, the technical revision of the Constitution, initially scheduled on the meeting’s agenda, was postponed by presidential order. The decision aims to allow further study of the proposed changes.

According to the same source, the President stressed that the delay is intended to safeguard the “achievements of the Independent National Electoral Authority,” a key institution overseeing elections in Algeria.

The adoption of the political parties law comes just months ahead of the 2026 local and legislative elections, which several opposition parties have confirmed they will contest, marking a potentially significant phase in Algeria’s political landscape.
