The Algerian government has announced a new financing program to renew the national public transport fleet, aiming to import 10,000 buses by 2026 as part of its modernization strategy.
This large-scale initiative, aligned with directives from the President of the Republic, seeks to modernize Algeria’s transport infrastructure and improve service quality nationwide. The financing will be facilitated through loans provided by the National Agency for Entrepreneurship Support and Development (ANSDA), also known as “Nasda.” This support mechanism will help young entrepreneurs and transport operators acquire new buses and enhance their operations.
The first deliveries are scheduled for January 2026, featuring Trisam buses—locally assembled models that mark the beginning of the renewal phase. Additional batches will arrive in February and March, progressively covering the national network’s needs. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport, in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, is conducting a detailed inventory of the buses to be replaced across all provinces.
In response to concerns raised by Algiers-based MPs about deteriorating urban transport conditions, Saïd Sayoud, Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, confirmed that buses older than 30 years will be replaced. The implementation will occur over a six-month period, following the schedule established by the Head of State.
The banking sector will also participate in the program, offering financing facilities alongside ANSDA, under the framework of the 2003 presidential decree promoting youth employment.
On the regulatory side, the Ministry is updating public passenger transport standards to ensure service continuity, safety, and hygiene compliance. Local mixed commissions will monitor and inspect vehicles regularly across all wilayas.
Professional driver training is also a core component of the reform. Currently, 398 accredited centers offer certification programs, while 180 transport officials have recently completed technical inspection training in partnership with the National Company for Automotive Technical Control to improve safety oversight.
Through this ambitious renewal program, the Algerian government aims to modernize its public transport system, create job opportunities for youth, and ensure safer, more reliable mobility for citizens across the country.
