Algeria has once again secured its position as Spain’s leading natural gas supplier in 2025, marking the third consecutive year at the top, even as US gas exports to Madrid saw a sharp increase.
Algeria strengthens its dominance in Spain’s gas market
For the third year in a row, Algeria has topped the list of natural gas suppliers to Spain, reinforcing its strategic role in the country’s energy security. According to Spanish media reports, Algerian gas exports to Madrid increased by 6.3% compared to 2024, reaching a total of 331,464 gigawatt hours (GWh).
The Spanish newspaper Capital Madrid reported that Algeria accounted for 38.5% of Spain’s total gas imports in 2025. This placed it ahead of the United States, despite the latter significantly expanding its liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments to the Spanish market in recent years.
Medgaz pipeline remains the backbone of Algerian supplies
Data cited by Capital Madrid shows that Algeria supplied Spain with 128,504 GWh of natural gas in 2025. The majority of this volume—107,179 GWh—was transported via the Medgaz pipeline, highlighting the importance of pipeline infrastructure in ensuring stable energy flows between the two countries.
The remaining 21,325 GWh were delivered as liquefied natural gas. This LNG volume represents a 2% decrease compared to deliveries recorded in 2024, suggesting a continued preference for pipeline gas over seaborne shipments.
US gas exports rise sharply as Russia’s decline continues
Meanwhile, US LNG exports to Spain surged by 98% in 2025 compared to the previous year, reaching 111,660 GWh. This volume accounted for around 30% of Spain’s total gas imports during the period, reflecting Washington’s growing footprint in the European energy market.
In contrast, Russian natural gas deliveries to Spain dropped sharply. Imports from Russia fell by 41% in 2025, totaling 42,629 GWh, or 11.4% of Spain’s overall gas imports, continuing a downward trend driven by geopolitical and supply concerns.
Despite intensifying competition from US LNG, Algeria has maintained its leadership as Spain’s primary gas supplier. With strong pipeline connectivity and consistent export volumes, Algeria continues to play a central role in meeting Spain’s energy needs amid shifting global supply dynamics.
