Algeria to Welcome Back Global Brands, Including Zara and Pull & Bear, to Boost Retail Sector

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced plans to reintegrate major international brands, including Zara and Pull & Bear, into the local market. The strategy aims to revive shopping centers and enhance Algeria’s economic appeal.

The decision was highlighted during the Council of Ministers meeting on January 26, emphasizing Algeria’s focus on balancing global trade with local entrepreneurship. Young Algerian entrepreneurs are expected to play a crucial role by managing and distributing popular global brands.

President Tebboune stressed that involving Algerian operators would strengthen economic self-sufficiency while fostering youth-driven business initiatives. This development follows the December 2024 withdrawal of Inditex brands like Zara, Pull & Bear, and Bershka, which left a significant void in the Algerian retail scene.

A Strategic Approach to Reopening Algerian Markets

The government’s push for international brand re-entry coincides with efforts to make Algeria a favorable business destination. Tebboune emphasized the importance of "protecting Algeria’s reputation with top-tier brands" while ensuring local operators lead distribution efforts.

As shopping centers seek renewed vitality, the return of popular franchises is expected to meet consumer demand, particularly among young shoppers. Existing brands like Adidas, Nike, Decathlon, and Kiabi continue to thrive, but the absence of iconic Inditex brands remains significant.

Filling the Gap Left by Inditex’s Departure

The departure of the Inditex group, previously managed by an Emirati operator, resulted from corporate restructuring. This exit has negatively impacted Algerian shopping centers, diminishing their appeal and customer traffic.

The government's strategy aims to revitalize the retail sector and attract new brands, further modernizing the shopping experience. Local entrepreneurs are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities to foster economic growth and innovation.

In addition, President Tebboune emphasized the need to regulate imports by sector, curbing speculation and ensuring market stability. This approach is intended to enhance the efficiency of trade flows while protecting Algerian businesses and consumers.
