Prince Abdelkader: A Legacy of Heroism and Modern Leadership Honored at International Forum

Algiers — Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders, Laïd Rebiga, highlighted the enduring legacy of Prince Abdelkader, emphasizing his remarkable contributions to heroism, freedom, and modern state-building during the inauguration of the International Forum on Algerian Prince Abdelkader.

Speaking on Saturday at the National Army Club, Rebiga described Prince Abdelkader as “a man of great renown, a scholar in religion, deeply cultured in the history of his nation, a master of politics and diplomacy, and an exceptional leader. He embodied the humility of great men and the asceticism of the righteous and pious. In life, he was a guide and an inspiration; in death, he remains an eternal memory.”

Rebiga praised Prince Abdelkader’s principles, noting his role as a pioneer of human rights in its modern conception. “He is a cornerstone in human history for his openness to differing opinions and his willingness to engage in dialogue, even during times of war and peace, at a time when extremism and militancy were prevalent,” Rebiga said.

A Visionary Leader and Resistance Icon

Rebiga recounted the 15-year resistance led by Prince Abdelkader against colonial occupation, during which the Emir’s armies inflicted successive defeats on enemy forces. “Despite their losses, the occupiers violated covenants and agreements and escalated their brutal campaigns, weakening the Emir’s armies over time,” he said.

The Minister also highlighted Prince Abdelkader’s role as the founder of the modern Algerian state. He described the state as being “characterized by the moral foundation of its laws, the integrity of its men, and the careful balance of executive, legislative, and judicial powers, including a well-structured army under the Emir’s direct care, serving as a protective shield for the nation.”

Honoring a National Symbol

The forum’s organization coincides with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s initiatives to celebrate the life and achievements of Prince Abdelkader. Rebiga said these include the production of an international film and the establishment of a monumental tribute in Oran. “These actions reflect the President’s deep respect for the country’s symbols and its great leaders, who raised the banners of glory and honor,” Rebiga remarked.
