Algeria and China Partner on Omoda Automotive Plant to Boost Vehicle Exports and Local Industry

The Ministry of Industry announced the launch of a vehicle manufacturing plant in Algeria, a joint venture between Chinese automaker OMODA/JAECOO and Algerian industrial group IRIS, aimed at strengthening Algeria’s automotive sector and increasing exports to Africa, the Arab world, and Europe.

During an official meeting at the Ministry’s headquarters, Industry Minister Sifi Gharib received a delegation from SARL Automobile New Generation, including representatives of OMODA/JAECOO, a subsidiary of Chinese automotive giant CHERY, and the CEO of IRIS Group. The gathering outlined strategic plans to build a comprehensive industrial ecosystem for car manufacturing in Algeria.

The project will not only focus on producing passenger vehicles but also on boosting local manufacturing capacity through the involvement of Chinese subcontractors and the integration of Algerian SMEs into the supply chain. The initiative includes a detailed roadmap covering technical, financial, and organizational phases, with an emphasis on localizing production and promoting industrial self-sufficiency.

The Omoda plant will also serve as a catalyst for technology transfer and skills development, with training programs and R&D initiatives designed to build local expertise in automotive engineering and production. Both parties stressed the importance of forming a robust supplier network and developing national subcontracting chains.

This Algerian-Chinese partnership is set to mark a turning point in Algeria’s industrial strategy. By localizing production and focusing on exports, the Omoda project positions Algeria as a key regional player in the automotive industry and a hub for vehicle exports to multiple global markets.
