Algeria Calls for Ceasefire and Justice Amid El Fasher Crisis in Sudan

During an emergency UN Security Council meeting, Algeria’s ambassador Amar Benjamaa warned of a deadly escalation in El-Fasher, Sudan, calling for an immediate ceasefire and international accountability.

Algeria raises alarm at UN over Sudan crisis

Algeria’s representative to the United Nations, Amar Benjamaa, described the situation in El-Fasher as a dangerous step toward Sudan’s partition. He condemned the emergence of a “parallel authority” in areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group accused of atrocities.

Urgent call for ceasefire and civilian protection

Speaking on behalf of Algeria and other concerned states, Benjamaa urged an immediate halt to hostilities in El-Fasher. He cited disturbing reports of violence against civilians, including the killing of over 460 patients in a targeted hospital attack.

Demand for justice and accountability

Benjamaa called on the international community to hold RSF and its supporters accountable. He emphasized that silence in the face of such crimes encourages further violence. He also stressed the need for safe access to humanitarian aid and protection for aid workers.

Humanitarian disaster unfolds

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), over 26,000 people were displaced within 48 hours following the RSF assault. The city faces severe shortages, mass killings, and the abduction of medical personnel.

Algeria’s position: unity and sovereignty

Algeria reaffirmed its commitment to Sudan’s territorial integrity. Benjamaa concluded that the battle for El-Fasher is not just military—it threatens the future of Sudan as a unified state.
