In an escalating diplomatic standoff between Algeria and France, Algeria has expelled additional French agents from the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI) following an earlier wave of expulsions in mid-April. The French government has vowed to escalate its response, while the Interior Minister is at the center of the ongoing crisis.
After the unprecedented reciprocal expulsion of 12 consular agents by both Algeria and France in mid-April, Algeria has now declared more French agents persona non grata. These agents belong to the DGSI, the French internal security agency. According to AL24 News, the expulsion follows reports that these agents entered Algeria under diplomatic passports without following the proper procedures. Journalist Fayçal Métaoui, who is also a presidential adviser, emphasized the legal nature of the expulsion, citing the Vienna Convention and consular agreements between the two countries.
The French government, led by Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, is reportedly intensifying its stance on Algeria. The Minister has been at the heart of the diplomatic crisis, with some suggesting his actions are part of a broader political strategy within his conservative party. Following the expulsion of the consular agents, France retaliated by expelling 12 Algerian agents and recalling its ambassador.
The diplomatic impasse between Algeria and France remains unresolved, with both sides taking hard stances. Algeria’s expulsion of French agents signals its firm position on defending sovereignty, while France, under Retailleau’s leadership, is considering further measures. The situation continues to deteriorate, with both governments set to resume talks in the coming weeks.
