With Ramadan just weeks away, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has instructed the government to guarantee price stability and sufficient supply across Algeria, aiming to prevent shortages and unjustified price hikes during the holy month.
As seasonal demand rises, the executive branch is prioritizing purchasing power protection and market stability to ensure citizens can observe Ramadan without financial strain.
Government Orders to Safeguard Consumers
At the latest Council of Ministers meeting, the President of the Republic outlined a clear course of action: eliminate supply disruptions and prevent speculative price increases.
According to an official statement from the Presidency, the Head of State ordered ministers to “ensure that all the necessary conditions are in place to enable citizens to spend the holy month in complete peace and without concern.”
He emphasized that Ramadan is a sacred period marked by solidarity and mutual aid, calling for “redoubled efforts and mobilization” to respond swiftly to citizens’ concerns.
Ensuring Price Stability and Adequate Supply Nationwide
While highlighting the current availability of agricultural goods and essential food products, the president stressed that abundance must translate into stable and affordable consumer prices.
In recent weeks, authorities have launched coordinated actions under the supervision of the Ministry of Internal Trade and National Market Regulation. The objective is clear: maintain a regular supply of essential goods at reasonable prices throughout the country.
This proactive strategy relies on several key measures:
Increased mobilization of trade sector officials.
Stronger involvement of domestic producers.
Active participation of consumer protection associations.
Close coordination with economic partners.
Officials say this targeted approach is designed to prevent supply chain disruptions and curb unjustified price increases before they affect consumers.
Fighting Speculation and Strengthening Market Controls
Ramadan traditionally sees a surge in demand, particularly for staple food products. Such spikes can create market pressure and open the door to speculative practices.
To counter this risk, authorities have announced additional measures, including:
Establishing local markets in multiple regions.
Strengthening inspection and regulation mechanisms.
Intensifying efforts to combat speculation.
Launching public awareness campaigns to promote rational consumption and reduce food waste.
These steps aim to prevent artificial shortages and discourage intermediaries or traders from exploiting the seasonal demand surge.
A Focus on Purchasing Power Protection
With inflation and purchasing power remaining key public concerns, the government’s Ramadan strategy reflects a broader effort to stabilize Algeria’s domestic market. Ensuring price stability and sufficient supply during this sensitive period will be closely watched by consumers and businesses alike in the coming weeks.
