Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday a presidential decision to regularize the status of Algerian citizens living abroad in precarious and illegal situations, allowing them to return home under specific conditions.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the decision was issued by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and applies to Algerians abroad who are facing judicial or administrative proceedings for minor offenses related to public order or similar incidents.
The ministry explained that those concerned can regularize their legal status and return to Algeria in an organized and lawful manner. To benefit from this measure, eligible individuals are required to contact Algerian diplomatic and consular missions in their countries of residence to submit their applications.
Applicants must also formally commit to refraining from repeating the acts for which they are currently being prosecuted, the statement added.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting Algerian citizens abroad, stressing its role in protecting members of the national community and addressing their concerns in line with the directives of the country’s highest authorities.
This decision follows a cabinet meeting chaired by President Tebboune on January 11, during which he ordered the regularization of the situation of young Algerians living abroad in irregular and precarious conditions. The presidency stated that some of these individuals had been misled with the intent of exploiting them against their homeland.
The measure reflects Algeria’s broader approach to safeguarding its diaspora while encouraging lawful reintegration and national cohesion, offering affected citizens a structured path to return home.
