Algeria's Maritime Makeover: Transport Minister Unveils Bold Plan to Revamp National Fleet and Compete Globally!

Mohamed EL-Habib Zahana Minister of Transport

The Minister of Transport, Mohamed El-Habib Zahana, emphasized the necessity of establishing a favorable environment for Algeria's National Maritime Transport Company (ENTMV) to enhance its services and align with current global trends.

This sentiment was conveyed during the inauguration of the study days aboard the vessel "Badji-Mokhtar 3" at the port of Algiers, focusing on the theme "ENTMV: State, challenges, and prospects for development." The event was attended by the Director-General of Customs, members of the National People's Assembly (APN), representatives from various ministries, companies, supervisory bodies, and security agencies.

Highlighting the government's commitment to advancing the maritime transport system and elevating the national fleet's standing internationally, the minister urged efforts to position ENMTV appropriately and keep pace with global advancements.

Mr. Zahana underscored the significance of creating a conducive environment, streamlining business operations, and instilling values among affiliates while addressing significant challenges, including intense competition from foreign maritime companies, meeting escalating demand, adhering to international ship standards, enhancing service quality, and fostering skills development within the company to ensure top-notch services.

To enhance competitiveness, ENTMV was advised to forge strategic partnerships for capacity building and network expansion, leveraging digitization and training, optimizing resources, maintaining vessels, and reinforcing internal controls, as per Mr. Zahana.

He also emphasized the need to invest in young talent to bolster the company, providing staff training aligned with core values to deliver quality public service and better cater to travelers, especially those from the national community abroad.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of ENMTV, Hellal Benaouda, attributed the company's challenges to long-standing structural issues, urging stakeholders to collaborate in improving services and overcoming obstacles through a series of measures discussed during the study days.

The workshops held over two days brought together industry players like customs and border police (PAF) to propose recommendations for ENMTV's advancement in line with governmental objectives.

According to reports, the company transported 40,861 passengers and 15,367 vehicles in 2023, capturing a market share of 53%. In the first nine months of 2024, the company conducted 444 crossings, facilitating the travel of 259,142 passengers and 124,249 vehicles.
