Algeria has experienced a remarkable drop in its cosmetics, perfumes, and body care products import bill, from over $500 million to just $58 million in 2024. The surge in local production has been pivotal in this transformation, as the country’s cosmetic industry now meets nearly 70% of domestic demand.
During the 3rd edition of the Cosmetica International Cosmetics Industry Exhibition in Algiers, Tayeb Zitouni, Algeria's Minister of Interior Trade and Market Regulation, elaborated on the country's success in reducing import dependence. “The local cosmetic industry has achieved a remarkable level of growth, now covering nearly 70% of the national demand for these products,” said Zitouni.
This shift highlights the government's strategic policies to support local production and reduce imports. Zitouni credited President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives for enhancing Algeria’s manufacturing capabilities and economic resilience. Additionally, the country's cosmetic industry has become competitive on the global stage due to improvements in both quality and quantity.
The growth in the sector has led to job creation, economic diversification, and the potential for exporting surplus products. Zitouni mentioned that these products could provide “promising export opportunities” and compete internationally at attractive prices. The industry’s expansion also contributes to a more stable economy with increased local employment.
Zitouni clarified that there has been no outright suspension of imports but rather a rationalization process aimed at strengthening local production while still leaving room for international trade. The Cosmetica exhibition, which featured 250 companies from 17 countries, has been viewed as an important step in growing Algeria’s cosmetic industry.
Zitouni also mentioned a national economic census of local products that will assess production capacities and further optimize Algeria’s industrial strategy. Furthermore, a new market regulation law is being developed to address challenges from parallel and digital markets, reinforcing the country’s regulatory framework.
Algeria’s cosmetic industry is poised for continued growth, bolstered by strategic policies and an increasing focus on self-sufficiency. With enhanced quality, competitive prices, and expanding export potential, the sector is set to be a key player in Algeria's economic future.
