Algeria is experiencing an intense heatwave on Wednesday, June 25, as a powerful heat dome settles over the Mediterranean basin. Affected regions include the north and inland areas, with temperatures expected to surpass 40°C (104°F). The National Meteorological Office has issued yellow alerts across several provinces, warning of stifling conditions caused by hot, humid air.
The heat dome currently gripping Algeria is part of a broader weather pattern impacting North Africa and Southern Europe. This dome traps hot air under high pressure, intensifying and prolonging heatwaves. Cities across northern Algeria are reporting dangerously high temperatures, especially in the coastal east and interior highlands.
The National Meteorological Office (ONM) forecasts severe weather conditions for central and eastern inland areas, the High Plateaus, and the Algerian-Malian border. Météo Algérie has placed the provinces of Relizane, Chlef, Aïn Defla, Béjaïa, Jijel, Skikda, Annaba, and El Tarf under yellow alert for heatwave risks.
In these regions, temperatures are expected to exceed 40°C (104°F), creating hazardous conditions, particularly due to the added humidity near the coast.
Authorities are urging the public to remain indoors during peak heat hours, hydrate frequently, and assist vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses. The Ministry of Health and local emergency services are also on alert.
This extreme weather event, driven by global climate change, is expected to persist through the end of the week. Meteorologists warn that such heat domes will become more frequent and severe. Citizens are advised to stay informed via official weather updates and take all necessary precautions to protect their health and safety.
