Chinese Kibing Group Proposes Major Solar Glass Investment in Algeria

The Chinese Kibing Group has submitted an investment project to Algeria’s Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energy to build a solar glass production plant with an annual capacity of 1.53 million tons.

The project also includes a facility for processing and recovering ultra-pure silica sand, with a capacity of 1.08 million tons per year, according to a ministry statement. It is expected to generate 3,000 direct jobs and achieve a local integration rate of 90%.

A global leader in glass manufacturing, Kibing Group specializes in solar, insulating, and medical glass. The Chinese delegation, led by Deputy General Manager Eric Wong Kuan, was received on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, by Secretary of State for Renewable Energy Noureddine Yassaâ and Secretary of State for Mines Karima Tafer, in the presence of senior ministry officials.

Boosting Algeria’s renewable energy hub role

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the project’s potential to develop Algeria’s natural resources—particularly silica sand—while building an integrated production chain in the solar energy sector. This would position Algeria as a regional hub for renewable energy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Noureddine Yassaâ underlined the government’s commitment to promoting “fruitful” partnerships with international companies, stressing that Algeria offers promising opportunities in hydrocarbons, clean energy, and mining. He highlighted reforms aimed at improving the investment climate and providing guarantees to investors, aligned with the country’s energy transition and economic diversification goals.

Valorization of mineral resources

Karima Tafer explained Algeria’s procedures and mechanisms for enhancing the value of national mineral resources under existing legislation.

At the close of the meeting, both parties agreed to pursue consultations to transform their shared vision into tangible projects. Technical working sessions will be held in the coming days with sectoral representatives to assess the project’s feasibility and compliance with national standards.
