Qatar’s Baladna Prepares Dairy Cows Shipment from U.S. for $3.5 Billion Algeria Project

American dairy cows are on their way to Algeria as part of Baladna’s massive agro-industrial project, confirmed U.S. Ambassador Elizabeth Moore Aubin.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Ambassador Aubin announced: “American dairy cows are on their way to Algeria... as part of Baladna's $3.5 billion agro-industrial project.”

The envoy added that U.S. company Valmont will provide state-of-the-art irrigation systems for the project, describing this collaboration as “a new chapter in agricultural cooperation between the United States and Algeria.”

Baladna Signs Over $500 Million in Initial Agreements

On Monday, Baladna Algeria signed contracts worth more than $500 million for the first phase of its integrated dairy and agro-industrial project. The signing ceremony took place at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center, in the presence of several Algerian ministers and international partners.

Back in April 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development inked an agreement with Baladna to establish a $3.5 billion dairy production complex in Algeria. The deal was signed under the supervision of the Ministers of Agriculture and Finance and attended by the Qatari ambassador to Algeria.

World’s Largest Milk Powder Production Project

According to Baladna, this mega-project aims to produce 1.7 billion liters of milk annually, meeting 50% of Algeria’s milk demand through the breeding of 270,000 cattle.

Spanning 117,000 hectares, the project will include:

  • Cereal and fodder production farms

  • A dairy and meat production facility

  • A milk powder manufacturing plant

Baladna described it as “the world’s largest integrated agro-industrial project for dairy and milk powder production.” The company emphasized that the initiative will use cutting-edge global technologies and supply 50% of Algeria’s milk powder and red meat needs.
