Algeria’s passport climbed 10 spots to 76th place in the 2026 Henley & Partners Passport Index, granting Algerian citizens visa-free or simplified access to 55 destinations worldwide, according to data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Algeria’s Strong Comeback in the 2026 Passport Ranking
The Henley & Partners Passport Index, considered the global benchmark for passport strength, ranks 199 passports based on access to 227 destinations without requiring a prior visa.
In its latest 2026 update, Algeria recorded one of its most notable improvements in recent years. The Algerian passport now ranks 76th globally, up from 86th in 2025 — a significant 10-place increase.
This progress reflects sustained diplomatic engagement and efforts to strengthen Algeria’s international mobility. Algerian citizens can now travel to 55 destinations without obtaining a traditional embassy-issued visa, either through visa-free entry, e-visas, or visas on arrival (VOA).
Expanded Travel Opportunities for Algerian Citizens
Algerian travelers continue to benefit from long-standing visa-free access within the Maghreb region and several West African countries, including Tunisia, Mauritania, Senegal, and Mali.
In addition, new travel corridors have opened, such as Angola, expanding options for business and tourism.
The growing adoption of digital travel authorizations has also improved mobility. Popular destinations such as Thailand and Singapore are now more accessible through streamlined e-visa or visa-on-arrival systems, simplifying travel procedures for Algerian passport holders.
North Africa Passport Ranking: Who Leads?
The 2026 Henley Index highlights a clear hierarchy among North African passports in terms of global mobility:
Morocco (62nd globally): The most powerful passport in North Africa, with visa-free or simplified access to 72 destinations.
Tunisia (66th): Offers access to 67 destinations worldwide.
Algeria (76th): Provides access to 55 destinations and stands out as the fastest-growing passport in the region.
Egypt (81st): Grants access to 50 destinations.
Although Algeria ranks third within North Africa, it recorded the strongest upward momentum in 2026.
A 20-Year Evolution of the Algerian Passport
Over the past two decades, the Algerian passport has experienced notable fluctuations in the Henley Index.
In 2006, Algeria ranked 73rd globally. However, the passport gradually declined, reaching its lowest position — 96th — in 2021.
Since then, a steady recovery has taken shape. Algeria moved up to 91st in 2022, improved to 86th in 2025, and now stands at 76th in 2026.
The 10-place jump between 2025 and 2026 marks one of the most significant improvements in the passport’s recent history, bringing it back to a competitiveness level similar to 2008–2009.
Algeria’s improved ranking in the 2026 Henley Passport Index signals growing international mobility for its citizens. While challenges remain compared to regional leaders like Morocco and Tunisia, the upward trend suggests continued diplomatic progress and expanded global travel opportunities in the years ahead.
