Algerian Red Crescent Faces New Controversy After Activists Allege Pressure and Misconduct

Following the recent case of writer Zineb Mellizi, two Algerian Red Crescent activists have accused the organization’s president, Ibtissem Hamlaoui, of pressure, abuse of influence, and judicial interference, sparking calls for an independent investigation.

In a nearly two-hour live stream, activist Yacine Ben Chetah revealed that he and other volunteers had been subjected to pressure, humiliation, and mistreatment during questioning after a complaint allegedly filed by Ibtissem Hamlaoui, president of the Algerian Red Crescent.

Ben Chetah described the investigation as tainted by “illegal practices” and “external interference.” His claims were echoed by journalist Hadjera Zeitouni, who denounced the “harsh and inhumane” conditions of interrogation.

The two accused Hamlaoui of exerting undue judicial influence, reigniting national debate about the integrity of humanitarian institutions in Algeria. Journalists and human rights advocates have called for an impartial inquiry to safeguard the organization’s credibility.

Sports commentator Hafid Derradji wrote, “The rule of law faces yet another test. What has been revealed demands an urgent and transparent investigation to protect the reputation of a historic institution.”

Journalist Leïla Bouzidi stated, “If Yacine Ben Chetah’s claims are true, we are facing a legal and moral scandal of the utmost gravity.” Similarly, journalist Oussama Wahid warned that the case could become a “judicial snowball” undermining public confidence.

Lawyer Toufik Hichour called the situation a “serious drift” that “calls into question respect for the law and citizens’ fundamental guarantees.” His colleague Latifa Dib urged immediate action, saying, “The reputation of Algerian justice—and of Algeria itself—must be preserved.”

\As public concern intensifies, numerous voices—including journalists, activists, and legal experts—are urging President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to launch an independent investigation. The case, observers note, highlights deeper issues of transparency, ethics, and freedom of expression within Algerian institutions.

So far, Ibtissem Hamlaoui has not publicly responded to the allegations. She remains presumed innocent until proven otherwise by judicial authority.
