Algerian Train Worker Samir Zitouni Hailed as Hero After Stopping UK Knife Attack

Samir Zitouni, a 48-year-old Algerian train employee with LNER, is being celebrated across the UK after bravely protecting passengers during a knife attack on a Doncaster–London train on November 1, 2025.

Samir Zitouni, who has served with the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) for over two decades, is in critical but stable condition after sustaining serious injuries while confronting the attacker. His selfless act has drawn praise from the British Transport Police and national media outlets.

The assailant, identified as 32-year-old Anthony W., has been charged with ten counts of attempted murder linked to the incident, as well as an additional charge related to a previous stabbing in London.

Police described Zitouni’s actions as “absolute heroism,” noting that his intervention “undoubtedly prevented multiple deaths.” CCTV footage reportedly captures him shielding passengers from the knife-wielding attacker.

LNER’s managing director, David Horne, stated: “In a moment of crisis, Samir showed extraordinary courage, putting his life at risk to protect others. We are immensely proud of him.”

An investigation is ongoing as the suspect remains in custody. Four other victims from the train attack are still hospitalized. Samir’s family has expressed gratitude for the overwhelming public support and the medical team’s care, calling him “a hero both at home and abroad.”
