Algerians Divided Over Syrian YouTuber Anas Chaïeb Controversy

A viral video by Syrian YouTuber Anas Chaïeb has reignited debate in Algeria over how foreigners are perceived, sparking both hospitality and mistrust.

Anas Chaïeb, known for his travel content, posted a video filmed in Algeria featuring a conversation with a local woman. The clip quickly went viral, triggering polarized reactions on social media.

Some Algerians accused Chaïeb of provoking controversy and harming the country's image. Others defended his right to express opinions, criticizing the national response as overly sensitive.

Social media amplified the debate. While some users saw no harm in the video, others believed the YouTuber sought attention through controversy. Tourism professionals noted the impact on Algeria’s image.

Sociologist Kamel El-Ayadi explained that Algerians are deeply protective of women, viewing them as symbols of national honor. The backlash, he said, was rooted in cultural identity rather than xenophobia.

Psychologist Samira Fekrach linked the reaction to Algeria’s gradual isolation and reduced international exchange. She noted that digital interactions have heightened sensitivity to cultural differences.

The Anas Chaïeb incident highlights Algeria’s struggle to balance openness with cultural preservation. It reflects a broader societal tension between welcoming outsiders and defending national dignity.
