Instagram Page “Gossiplyna” Admin Sentenced to One Year in Prison for Defamation

The Algiers Council of Justice on Tuesday upheld a one-year prison sentence and a 50 million centimes fine against the creator of the popular Instagram page “gossiplyna,” following a defamation complaint filed last October by Algerian actress Souhila Maalem.

The case surfaced when Maalem accused the account owner of publishing defamatory posts that violated her privacy. Investigators revealed that the individual behind “gossiplyna” impersonated a woman online and spread rumors and unverified claims about various public figures in Algeria’s artistic community.

The court charged the accused with defamation and infringement of personal freedom. Despite the defense arguing the posts were for “entertainment” and not meant to harm, the civil party, represented by Maalem’s lawyer, countered that the content caused serious damage to the actress’s image and constituted “real online harassment.”

The council confirmed the ruling from the Bir Mourad Raïs court, holding the individual accountable for digital misconduct.

This landmark ruling highlights the growing concern over online defamation and abuse in Algeria. It may pave the way for more public figures to pursue legal action against anonymous or pseudonymous accounts spreading harmful content across social media platforms.
